Welcome to New Carlisle News ONLINE!

      Happy Memorial Day Weekend
May 27, 2012
Let the long weekend begin! We wish everyone a safe and fun-filled Memorial Day. Please take time to remember the reason for this holiday. Here’s an explanation of the holiday from Wikipedia:

Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed annually in the United States on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War. (Southern ladies organizations and southern schoolchildren had decorated Confederate graves in Richmond and other cities during the Civil War, but each region had its own date. Most dates were in May.)
By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died in all wars. Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in theUnited States Armed Forces. As a marker it typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day
marks its end. (Wikipedia)

Oh, the memories! A smell, a song, the mention of a place—or sometimes nothing at all—brings a moment of the past back as vividly as if it happened yesterday. You’re focused on something totally unrelated, and all of a sudden—it’s 1975! You remember what someone said, a dress you loved to wear, the way the air felt at that moment… It really is amazing that our brains/minds have the ability to do that—amazing and sometimes so nice!
MIT researchers reported findings in March that indicate our memories are stored in certain brain cells. They were able to trigger memories in mice by stimulating cells with light—optogenics. Previously, memories were thought to be sort of amorphous—floating around inside our brains, “sparked through chaotic electrical charges.” Now it’s believed they can be manipulated.
Of course my first thought was, “Will this discovery help treat Alzheimer’s?”
My Aunt Mimi has had that cruel disease for several years. Before she was diagnosed, when she still lived in her home, she spent hours in the garden, loved getting together with her friends, and enjoyed each day of her retirement.
Her mind was clear enough to know something was wrong, but rather than dwell on the fear that knowledge inspired, she came up with a special time each day she called “Memory Lane.” While resting in the afternoon she would visit the wonderful times and places in her past. That Mimi has always been a very smart lady! I wish she could enjoy those memories again. Many happy memories to you!
Sincerely,
Susan Jones

The 2011-2012 Building Trades class had its ups and downs like usual. We started much earlier than the previous house. It is always a challenge to get the house started in August with blueprints being approved by the owner, obtaining building permits, surverys, soil samples, etc.
We had great weather this year. The surprisingly warm temperatures early in the spring made it a great year to be outside.
We are now in the process of finishing the house, installing kitchen cabinets, trim, shelving and decking.
We are building in Rolling Prairie next year for a former student of mine. It is funny how things go.
We would like to thank Susan Jones and the NC News for giving us great coverage this year.
